Electric Karting Meets Science and Entertainment in Pittsburgh

The Science of Speed at Kamin Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania brings motorsports, science and interactive entertainment together through a unique racing experience.

At the center of the attraction is a 750-foot, three-story multi-level go-kart track built within approximately 9,000 square feet. The track is powered by a fleet of OTL Superleggero and OTL Junior electric go-karts, giving visitors the opportunity to experience modern electric karting as part of the Science Center.

For museums, Family Entertainment Centers (FECs) and attraction operators, the project demonstrates how electric go-karting can complement an existing destination while introducing a new experience capable of attracting additional visitors and generating new revenue opportunities.

OTL Superleggero and Junior Electric Go-Karts

Science of Speed utilizes two models from the OTL electric kart lineup: the OTL Superleggero and OTL Junior.

The Superleggero provides the performance and driving experience for larger drivers, while the Junior extends the attraction to younger guests. Together, they give the Science Center greater flexibility to serve families and different driver demographics within the same karting attraction.

The fleet utilizes plug-in charging, providing the facility with a straightforward charging solution designed to support its electric karting operation.

For kart operators, choosing the right mix of karts is an important part of planning a facility. The kart fleet should align with the target audience, track design and overall experience the business wants to provide.

Where Science Meets the Racetrack

What makes this installation particularly unique is how naturally karting fits into the broader Science of Speed experience.

Visitors can experience racing firsthand while exploring concepts connected to:

  • Motorsports technology
  • Engineering
  • Physics
  • Motion
  • Force

Rather than existing as a separate entertainment component, the electric go-karts help bring these concepts to life through an interactive experience.

The track itself adds another dimension. Its three-story design takes racers through multiple elevations, while three-tier LED lighting creates a visually engaging environment for drivers and spectators.

The result connects the excitement of motorsports with the educational mission of Kamin Science Center.

More Than a Traditional Karting Facility

Science of Speed also illustrates how commercial electric go-karts can be incorporated beyond a traditional standalone karting business.

Much like an FEC may combine bowling, arcades, laser tag or other attractions, karting can become a complementary experience within a larger destination. Museums and entertainment venues can use the same approach to diversify what guests can do during their visit.

For an established destination like Kamin Science Center, an interactive racing attraction provides another reason to visit, another activity to experience and the potential to reach audiences interested in motorsports and karting.

For operators and developers, the project reinforces an important point: the kart fleet should be designed around the business – not the other way around.

Understanding the available space, customer demographics and type of experience you want to create can help determine which electric kart models are best suited for the facility.

Electric Karting Built Around the Experience

Science of Speed demonstrates how electric karting can become part of a much broader attraction.

By pairing OTL Superleggero and Junior electric go-karts with an immersive multi-level track, Kamin Science Center has created an experience that connects racing, technology and education while expanding what visitors can experience inside the facility.

Whether you’re developing a dedicated karting business, expanding an FEC or considering karting as a new attraction within an existing venue, selecting the right electric kart fleet is an important part of building the overall experience.
